Artist grade acrylic paints are the modern alternative to oil paints and come with many advantages such as being water based they do not have the toxicity of oil based paints and don't use environmentally damaging solvents.
A large range of mediums are available to mix with acrylics allowing them to be thinned, thickened, made transparent and retarders increase drying time which means they can also be blended wet on wet directly on the canvas.
