Graphite Pencils
Graphite pencils come in a range of grades from 9B (B denotes black) which are a soft pencil, which leaves a lot of graphite on the paper and produces dark lines, to 9H (H denotes Hard) suitable for lighter grey and thinner lines.
Graphite pencils are ideally suited for producing fine detail drawings and when used together with blending stumps and tortillions, can also create beautiful shading. They are able to be used on almost all paper surfaces, but I find the ultra smooth surface of bristol board gives the best results for fine detailed work and now only use bristol board for my pencil portraits and artwork.
