Soft Pastels and Pastel Pencils

Soft pastels are simply powdered colour pigment held together with a binder such as kaolin, gum arabic or other gum type binders. Artist grade soft pastels can give a rich, vibrant and luminous colour and can be easily blended on the paper. The large range of soft pastel colours available make them an ideal medium to create portraits and artwork.

Pastel pencils are a similar medium to soft pastels, however the pigment and binder are contained within a wooden pencil. Pastel pencils can be sharpened to a fine point and provide a more controlled way to add finer detail.
